5 Bad Dental Habits You Can Change

You and your teeth are in a lifelong relationship. If you don’t take care of them, the relationship won’t last - you’ll have damaged teeth which will make it difficult to chew food. By keeping your teeth clean, you will feel confident when you flash your smile. Watch out for these bad habits that can undermine your oral health:

  1. Not flossing. You know that you must brush your teeth to fight against cavities. But you can’t reach every crevice with those bristles - for that, you’ll need to floss. It allows you to remove the plaque that’s wedged between your teeth. Left uncleaned, that plaque will turn into tartar, which can cause gum disease. Your oral hygiene is linked to your overall health, so take the time to floss - it will save you from decayed teeth and expensive dental bills.

  1. Grinding or clenching your teeth. Forgetting to wear your night guard? It’s more damaging than you might think. Bruxism, or teeth grinding, can fracture or crack your teeth. The longer the problem goes without treatment, the worse off your mouth is. Clenching your teeth when you experience anxiety is also harmful since that pressure can wear down the gums and teeth. If you are concerned that you may be grinding your teeth at night, ask your dentist; they can examine your mouth for telltale signs, and create a night guard for you.

  1. Going to bed without brushing your teeth. Who else is guilty of this one after a long night out? Sometimes, you’re ready to fall asleep the moment you get home. The last thing you want to do is take the time to brush your teeth. But night may be the single most important time to clean your pearly whites. If you leave them be, they’ll spend all night snuggled up with bacteria and food particles - that’s a recipe for cavities.

  1. An unhealthy diet. Certain foods are sure to damage your teeth. One example is ice - don’t chew it. The cold temperature and the hard surface can crack your teeth. You should also steer clear of sugary sodas, which combine acid with sweetness - resulting in decayed teeth. Snacks like chewy or hard candies put a lot of pressure on your teeth, as do popcorn kernels. Stick to a healthier diet, and your oral health will be better for it.

  1. Biting your nails. You know that teeth are strong: they’re the tools you use every day to break down food. But there are some things you shouldn’t bite with your teeth. Keep your nails out of your mouth: not only will it expose you to bacteria and hurt your cuticles, but it will also damage your teeth. When you chew food, the pressure is spread throughout your mouth safely, but when you bite a nail, it’s concentrated in one spot, increasing the risk of a chip or crack.

Breaking a habit isn’t easy. It takes time, patience, and dedication. If you are concerned about how your teeth are doing, then it might be time to visit the dentist. Looking for a Fairmont dentist?
